A. Arnold World Class Relocation
Announces Program To Enhance
Corporate Client Experience

Louisville, KY (March 5, 2010) As part of ongoing efforts to expand and enhance the client experience, A Arnold is launching a new program to welcome new corporate clients, and help them acclimate to their processes.

“Corporate relocations require different procedures than other types of moves. There are policies to be reviewed, and procedures to put in place. We implemented this “New Client Introduction Program” to ensure our new corporate clients are fully integrated into all of our systems, and that they have the opportunity to personally meet our Department Managers, and their Customer Service Counselor. Our goal is to make them feel comfortable with our personnel and systems right from the beginning” said Richard Russell, President of A. Arnold World Class Relocation.

Thank You!

I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes, prayers and flowers during the last month, for my initial surgery on May 12th and my “near death” emergency surgery on May 24th. My family and myself appreciate you so very much. I’m back home and on the mend now.                                                                           Linda Harris

From the President...

I wanted to give you an update since my last correspondence with you on March 1, 2010. Since my letter went out, the Board has received some good feedback and suggestions. We appreciate your concern about our dire situation and are pleased with your support, both financial and moral.

The Board met April 20, 2010, and we decided to cancel the 2010 Annual Convention. With our funds being at an all-time low mark for this fiscal period, we believe this is in the best interest of the IHM&W and its members. The good news is that we will not be charging a special assessment to our members. That being said, it is critical that all members pay their current dues for both 2010 and in future years.

Over the last few years, we have aggressively attempted to increase members to no avail. We are down to 46 members and 16 associate members. Any ideas that you may have to increase our membership base would be appreciated. In addition to increasing members as a way to increase revenues, we have come up with the following ideas:

  • Special assessment to existing members to help offset expenses.
  • Raise yearly dues for members.
  • Add different sponsorship levels – for example, gold, silver and bronze levels for associate members.
  • Solicit van lines and major suppliers to our industry for additional funds (perhaps through the new sponsorship levels).
  • Merge with another state association
  • Increasing the convention fee and/or drastically changing the format/location to reduce costs.

Please keep in mind that we have cut about all we can cut from the budget. All board members except Linda Harris are volunteers. We compensate Linda on an hourly basis and are fortunate to have someone like Linda who is committed to our cause. We will be cutting back on mailings and doing more with email and e-newsletters. Our meetings are held at Wheaton for no cost and all of us drive to Indy at our own expense. We do this because we are committed to the IHM&W, and believe that we need an association to represent moving companies in the state. We are committed now more than ever and do not want to throw in the towel.

We realize that many companies are hurting and that money is tight. The last thing we want to do is raise membership dues or charge an assessment, but we are running out of ideas to help increase revenues.

By not hosting the convention in 2010, we will be able to continue with the following programs and benefits to members:

  • IHM&W is Indiana’s only voice for the moving industry.
  • Professional association adds credibility to the moving and storage industry within the state.
  • The IHM&W works closely with the Department of Revenue to inform and consult state government on moving and storage issues.
  • IHM&W publishes a Membership Directory for all members (also on the web site).
  • IHM&W maintains a professional web site, www.ihmw.org.
  • IHM&W offers a link to your company’s website from our website.
  • The IHM&W provides members with a blank tariff, which can be used to file rates and provisions.
  • Annual conference with exhibitors, special speakers and networking opportunities.
  • Bi-monthly newsletter, Mover’s Messenger, provides the latest information and news on the association and the moving industry.
  • The IHM&W provides a college scholarship to kids with ties to the moving industry in Indiana.
  • The IHM&W is a member of the National Council of Moving Associations (NCMA), which provides us national credibility and the latest information on national trends.
  • The IHM&W is a member of the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA), passing along national updates to our members.
  • The IHM&W recently produced the “Moving in Indiana” brochure. This important brochure can only be purchased through IHM&W and is endorsed by the Department of Revenue.

In order to raise additional revenues for the IHM&W, we are working on new “partnership level” opportunities for members, vendors and van lines. Please look for the roll out of this new program shortly.

It is our hope that by saving money from not hosting the convention this year, and with the economy rebounding in 2010-2011, the convention in future years will be both affordable and meaningful to the IHM&W and its members.

We do ask each of you one favor – well, actually two. The first one I already mentioned – please pay your dues in full and on time. The second is to spread the good word to non-members about the IHM&W and encourage these folks to join. Even if the above bullet points are not relevant to them (or they basically want to know why spend $300 per year for IHM&W membership), tell them this:

It’s like insurance – money well spent to protect your interests in case something bad happens to movers in Indiana.  There is no lobbying group for our industry in the state – we’re it. We work closely with the Department of Revenue to make sure that they understand our business and how professionally committed we are to serve the public – the right way! Without our voice and efforts, no one would be looking out for you, your drivers, packers, loaders, salespeople and warehousemen.

We look forward to any ideas you may have on any of the topics we have discussed in this memo. Please do not hesitate to contact any of the Board members if you have any questions or suggestions. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Robert O. Shetler, Sr.
President

Chuckle
A mother's bachelor son invited her over for a meal.  He had just gotten two new dogs and wanted his mom to see them.

When she sat down at the table, she noticed that the dishes were the dirtiest that she had ever seen in her life.  "Have these dishes ever been washed?"  she asked, running her fingers over the grit and grime.

"They're as clean as soap and water could get them," he answered.  She felt a bit apprehensive but started eating anyway.

The food was really delicious, and she said so, despite the dirty dishes.

When dinner was over, her son took the dishes, put them on the floor, whistles, and yelled, "Here, Soap! Here, Water!

All My Sons Recently Honored

All My Sons Moving and Storage of Indianapolis was recently honored by the Wheeler Mission Ministries for its efforts in supporting the community. “Our company loves this community and supporting a notable charity like the Wheeler Mission Ministries is a joy,” said Christopher Lambert, president of the Indianapolis moving company.

The Drumstick Dash Night at Conseco Fieldhouse honored mission supporters, while providing the chance to cheer on the Indiana Pacers as they took on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Event sponsors, including Lambert, were invited onto the court after the game to cut down the net and take a picture with the Pacers. This past fall the Indianapolis local movers helped to sponsor Wheeler Mission’s food drive during the Annual Drumstick Dash. More than 9,250 men, women, and children ran or walked the course making it the largest event to date. Proceeds from the race benefited the Wheeler Mission Ministries.

Insurance Markets--Interaction
 of Catastrophic Losses and
Market Conditions

By Kenneth Fontana, Fontana Insurance Solutions

No, this isn’t directly related to the moving & storage insurance industry, but the topic is germane to all who want or need to purchase commercial insurance products.

Today, Willis of London released a statement advising that the insurance rates within the Energy sector and most particularly in the Oil exploration sector are firming and expected to rise “As a Direct Result of the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf”.

In their release, they stated the firming of the market place is a larger issue for those companies doing business there, because they were anticipating continued discounted rates and, rather than seeing lower premiums than last year, they are not only going to see no decrease but likely increased premiums.

Think about this for a moment. While there were two other large claims that occurred within the energy world in the past 6 months, this one catastrophic event is going to impact insurance pricing across the entire energy exploration sector across the entire globe.

Compound that with the consideration that the oil & gas firms who’s rates are going to go up rather than down will price-point their products to ensure they maintain revenue projections expected by their stockholders.

The last thought is this. Insurance rates never “firm” or “increase” for only a single year. Once they trend, they tend to hold onto that trend for a couple years, if not more.

In short, we’re all going to be paying for this loss for a very long time when purchasing oil related products. Fuel at the pumps, oil changes, tires…

One event………..and we’re not even fully into hurricane season yet. ■
